    Intent

The intent of our Art curriculum is to deliver an engaging curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the development of every child’s ability and academic achievement in the area of Art. We teach our children to value the artistic process over the product to nurture children’s creativity. Skills are taught progressively to ensure that all children are able to learn and practice in order to develop as they move through the school. Children will also develop their understanding of the visual language of art with effective teaching and considered sequences of lessons and experiences. Understanding of the visual elements of art and design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) will be developed by providing a curriculum, which will enable children to reach their full potential.

    Implementation

The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each art topic are mapped across each year group and are progressive throughout the school. Teachers implement high quality short, medium and long terms plans that include a range of fundamental skills and technical knowledge. Teachers assess children session by session to gauge understanding of key artistic skills and language and provide opportunities for children to critically evaluate their own work. Teachers ensure children have access to wide range of high quality resources by planning opportunities for them to work with a range of different media. Teachers provide opportunities for children to take Art outside in F.O.X time (Fabulous Outdoor Explorer time) and across the curriculum subjects.

    Impact

The structure of the art curriculum ensures that children are able to develop their knowledge and understanding of the work of artists, craftspeople and designers from a range of times and cultures and apply this knowledge to their own work. The consistent use of children’s sketchbooks means that children are able to review, modify and develop their initial ideas in order to achieve high quality outcomes. Children learn to understand and apply the key principles of art: line, tone, texture, shape, form, space, pattern, colour, contrast, composition, proportion and perspective. The opportunity for children to refine and develop their techniques over time is supported by effective lesson sequencing and progression between year groups. This also supports children in achieving age related expectations at the end of their cohort year. By the time children leave our school they will:

    • An excellent attitude to learning and independent working.
    • Have the ability to act as critical thinkers and evaluate their own work.
    • Have a thorough knowledge of which tools, equipment and materials to use to create their art.
    • Become passionate and creative young artists.
